The Mayo Clinic website has an good article summarizing some important benefits of regular exercise. Here are some of the reasons they listed:
- Exercise improves your mood.
- Exercise combats chronic diseases.
- Exercise helps you maintain a healthy weight.
- Exercise strengthens your heart and lungs.
- Exercise promotes healthy sleep.
Just wanted to post a little reminder of some of the benefits of exercising. Whether you work out with a personal trainer or you exercise on your own, in Shreveport or anywhere else, it’s just important that you are getting physical activity.
Personal Training in a Box: Today is the U.S. Launch of the Wii Fit, a game and related hardware designed for the Nintendo Wii. Some say that this is personal training on your TV. The Wii Fit
will have exercises from four categories: Aerobic Exercise, Muscle Conditioning, Yoga Poses, and Balance Games. Although I don’t think this will totally replace outdoor exercise and time in the gym, it is definitely better than sitting around watching TV. If you or your kids are going to play video games, this would be my suggestion. The makers of the game say that it will help promote a healthy lifestyle and encourage people to stay active. If you are working with a personal trainer, maybe they can work in some of the Wii games into your session…
The Wii fit is projected to sell 3 to 4 million units in the United States and will probably sell out in Shreveport very quickly.

Matt Allison, a student at Penn State University has won a $10,000 prize to apply towards a unique fitness innovation. Allison is going to be using the prize money to help develop a “virtual personal trainer.” The device will be a portable touchscreen unit that will track workouts, monitor progress, store exercise information, provide workout advice, display nutrition information, and will track the user’s progress through charts and graphs.
The device will also sync with a fitness-based social networking site. There is a possibility that the device will be developed for an existing hardware unit, such as the iPod, the iPhone
, or some kind of Windows Mobile-based PDA.
An Ohio woman has started a business that allows moms to work out and take care of their children at the same time. Angela Devaney, owner of ‘Mommy and Me,’ is a licensed practical nurse and personal trainer specializing in pre- and post-natal fitness. Devaney stated that “When I became a mom, I couldn’t figure out how to combine work, being a mother, and staying fit.” She started ‘Mommy and Me’ as a way for her to do all three.
‘Mommy and Me’ is holding a fitness 5K Run/Walk and a One Mile Run/Walk on Saturday in Mansfield, Ohio. Strollers are allowed at the event and babies and children are entered free and are encouraged to take part in the fun. Read the rest of this entry »

This video is hilarious. It shows you how NOT to use a medicine ball!
Apparently one out of four dogs and cats in America are obese. Seems like you could just feed them less right? And maybe let them run around a little. Well now a company in California is offering personal fitness training for your pets. They say that obese pets run a higher risk of developing similar diseases as humans, such as diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, and other medical conditions. Read the rest of this entry »
Patrick Welch at the Seattle post has written an article about choosing a personal trainer. Patrick is an ACSM certified personal trainer. He makes some pretty good points and I though I would post part of it here. Even though this post is from a guy in Seattle you can apply his advice to choosing a personal trainer to improve your personal fitness in the Shreveport or Bossier area. You can read the whole post here.
#1 Certifications: not all are equal. Some emphasize performance training, strength training, endurance, injury prevention and rehab or are a combination of elements. A good rule of thumb; how long did it take to complete and how much did it cost? There seems to be a direct relationship between the amount of time and money a trainer has invested in themselves and how much they care about the level of service they offer their clients.
#2 Experience: look for a balance between how much the trainer knows and how much they can teach of what they know. My brother can tell you the history of the electric guitar in irritatingly minute detail, but I’ve never heard him play anything more than the opening riff to “Smoke on the Water”… which he learned in 1972. By itself, how long someone has been doing a job is a very unreliable indicator of value. Read the rest of this entry »
